Вследствие этого профилактика и лечение йододефицитных заболеваний (ЙДЗ) требуют использования в питании населения йодированной соли и назначения лекарственных препаратов йода. Широко известно, что применение этих средств зарекомендовало себя в качестве эффективного метода профилактики и лечения ЙДЗ, в первую очередь эндемического зоба (ЭЗ) (диффузный нетоксический зоб). Первые научные исследования ЭЗ в СССР относятся к 1930-м годам прошлого века и связаны с именем О.В. Николаева – выдающегося хирурга-эндокринолога и специалиста по профилактике ЭЗ. В одной из своих первых публикаций “Этиология эндемического зоба”, вышедшей в свет в 1932 г., он определил важность проблемы ЭЗ и предложил способы дополнительного обеспечения организма йодом, включая обеспечение исключительно йодированной солью населения, проживающего на подверженных этому заболеванию территориях.
