Abstract
Purpose: to determine association between smoking habits, thyroid volume and serum TSH. METHODS: in context of internationals projects Monika (1995; age group 25—34) and HAPIEE (2005; age group 45—69) were formed representational groups of Novosibirsk. Were examinated 960 randomly selected participants. Ultrasonic scanning, clinical examination of the thyroid, serum TSH, Т4 were performed to every second. Was analyzed iodine concentration in spot urine samples. Smoking habits were investigated with questionnaires and interviews. Persons, smoking no less than one cigarette a day, were reputed as smokers. RESULTS: smokers part in the age of 25—34 was 47.5%: men — 67%, women — 28%, smokers part in the age of 45—69 was 32%: men — 52%, women — 15.5%. Median of iodine concentration in urine was: 47 microg/g in age group of 25—34 (1995 г), 107 microg/g in age group of 45—69 (2005). Thyroid volume at ultrasonic scanning was positively associated with smoking habits (p < 0.01); current smoking was strongly associated with the risk of goiter in women (odds ratio [OR] = 2.7, 95% [CI]: 1.02—7.2). Serum TSH levels to be lower in smokers than non-smokers and this has a significant bias to men than women, p = 0.001 (age group 45—69). No association was found between of solitary or multiple thyroid nodules with smoking habits.

Abstract
The object of the research was to study the apoptosis of blood neutrophils and amount of immunoregulatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-8, IL-4) in patients at the age from 19 to 60 years. 52 euthyroid patients (11 men and 41 women) with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and 15 patients (5 men and 10 women) with Graves’ disease (GD) with thyrotoxicosis of various severity were examined. It was shown, that current AIT and GD is characterized by an increase of neutrophils readiness for apoptosis against a background of blood cytokine profile with reflects neutrophils active involving in the disease immunopathogenesis of autoimmune thyropaties.
